January 2025

January’s North Coast Exchange meeting was held in Ballycastle and there was a very good turn out considering the weather!

Martin Donnelly, one of Ballycastle exchange users, gave a fascinating and informative talk, Introducing Hedge Carpentry and Green Wood Working. Martin brought along some beautiful examples of the chairs, table, stool and spoons that he has carved and made from native and reclaimed wood. He also showed us a wonderful selection of the traditional tools that he uses to make his unique pieces.

From the many questions that followed, it was very clear that everyone had thoroughly enjoyed Martin’s talk and were keen to learn more. There was a call for a basic carpentry skills workshop , possibly starting with spoon carving, to be considered……watch this space!

Also at the event was a table displaying a variety of items (eggs, clothes, books, plants, jewellery) for exchange and several transactions took place over the morning.

Olivier explained about the idea of having an exchange stall at local markets in the North Coast area. This idea will be explored and potential market locations will be investigated over the next few weeks.

Extending along the North Coast?

On Wednesday 5th February, Elaine, Pauline, Wendy and Sally went along to the Cosh Bar outside Derry to talk with a group of people from the Derry /Donegal area who are keen to start a Community Exchange in the area.

Elaine gave an explanation of how the NCCE began and how the system works both locally and worldwide. Pauline, Sally and Wendy talked about their exchange experiences and the role of an area administrator.

There was a very positive response to the information and there were lots of questions, ideas and suggestions from the group, who were all very enthusiastic about having a local community exchange in their area.

In the meantime, several attendees signed up to the NCCE group with the ambition to have their own branch once they experience how it works. They all asked to receive the NCCE newsletter.

It was a very positive, enthusiastic evening that clearly showed the interest in all that the community exchange concept offers.
